Having An After-Plan

As a food allergy parent, I have many fears (as does any other parent). But one of my more prominent fears is how would my children be taken care of if something happened to me? Morbid, I know but still a fact of life that has to be considered.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Andrew Spafford of A Special Needs Plan. Unlike other groups that I have encountered, I felt the same true genuine passion that I feel about what I do within Andrew. Call it a gut feeling but speaking with him made me think about planning not just for my future but my childrens' futures as well. The founder, Ryan Platt, was kind enough to send me some great information to share with all of you. True to my word, I go with the motto "Sharing is caring" so please don't feel as if I am being pushy regarding this issue. As always, I am just sharing information that may be helpful to those who need it.

A Special Needs Trust is Only One Piece of the Puzzle

Ryan Platt, Founder

Families with a special needs loved one are challenged with the day-to-day responsibilities of care and the weight of planning for the future. Families understand the significance of having a Special Needs Trust that is designed by a qualified attorney. A properly designed Trust clearly designates how resources and assets will be used, ensures the continuation of future government benefits, and most importantly, it helps to secure the Loved One’s quality of life.

What is a Special Needs Trust? Having a Special Needs Trust is important; however, it is only one piece that aids in properly planning for the future of your special needs loved one. The Special Needs Trust acts as one of the center pieces inside a puzzle. Without taking time to look at the back of the box to see what the entire puzzle looks like, it’s difficult to envision which pieces join together and how big the puzzle actually is. Similarly, many facets of a loved one’s future interconnect to lay together A Special Needs Plan™.

What Does a Special Needs Trust Ensure? Looking at the back of the puzzle box will show you how A Special Needs Plan™ connects the Special Needs Trust to the following pieces:
  • THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE CARE-GIVERS to clearly define the day-to-day living responsibilities, goals for the future, and complexities of daily decisions for the individuals who will care for your special loved one when the primary caregiver passes away.
  • DISTRIBUTION RULES of trust and educating the trustee in the proper use of money. If money is used in a trust for the wrong reason, it could become disqualified and place future benefits in jeopardy.
  • A PROACTIVE TAX STRATEGY to understand the position of taxes today, the probable increase in taxes and decrease in public benefits in the future, and to learn how to position your money and assets providing for your loved one and your loved one’s future, not for the government’s future.
  • A CLEAR FUNDING STRATEGY for the future of the entire family.
  • A COMMUNICATION STRATEGY that educates extended family members (especially grandparents) on the importance of gifting and leaving money in the “right” way so government benefits are not lost.
  • CHANGE.  Life will change, and your loved one’s development very well may change over time. Therefore, it’s important that the comprehensive plan (including the Special Needs Trust) is designed with prudent flexibility to move with the ebbs and flows of life.

When all the pieces are sitting in the box, it’s overwhelming for families in determining where and how to get started. It’s critical to turn the box over and to keep the whole picture in front of you. At A Special Needs Plan™, we help families connect the right pieces to plan for and secure L.I.F.E.™ (Lasting Independence For Everyone™).

Who Needs A Plan? YOUR FAMILY needs a plan in place. And the moment you have all been waiting for, the announcement of who found Winona for this month's giveaway of "Where's Winona?" And the winner is................ (record scratch)

Before I announce, I would like to let you know that not only do I appreciate all of you who have entered and shared the giveaway information with others but also Winona Pure Oils for giving me the opportunity to do this for them. Wait, I didn't show you where the Winona Pure Sunflower Oil Spray was hidden, did I? Well, goodness, I don't know what I am thinking, can't forget to do that!! I mean, what kind of host do you think I would be if I didn't give all of the details, right? I mean, I know that it's been so utterly cold and drab outside and studies have shown that people can have symptoms similar to SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) during the winter months due to low vitamin d exposure which could lead to foggy thinking and unclear though patterns. And you would think that this would make me say to myself "Hey, what are you doing here? Details, we need details woman and NOW!" Like, you would think that these would just automatically pop into my head as I am typing so that you, my beloved blog and page followers would feel as if they were getting more insight as to how my mind is thinking, where we are going with these giveaways, how they even jumped into my head at all and if so....................... have I tormented you long enough? Are you actually reading all of this or have most of you skimmed down to the winner? And then there are others who are just about to say "What is she even talking about?!"

I am proud to announce that

Rachel Starchman

is this month's winner!!

Rachel will receive a 3 pack of Sunflower Spray sent right to her home.

Reminder: There will be one more "Where's Winona?" giveaway next month so stay tuned for details. Don't give up if you haven't won- you have to enter to win, right?  For more information on the complete line of Winona Pure Oils products, please visit them online or visit their Facebook page (click here) and let them know that Nutrimom sent you (you know, that crazy blogger chick).

PS: So....where was it?! Here is where I hid the can of sunflower oil ~

"The Princess and the Peanut" Book Review

I had heard this lovely book talked about A LOT (always good things) but because my children are ..sigh..getting too old to read to, I did not seem to have a reason to go get a copy. And then, an opportunity arose and it appeared in front of my (much like the Princess in the book itself). I know it may seem silly for an adult to be exited over a child's book but I am a book lover at heart so to me, it was a special treat.

"The Princess and the Peanut",written by Sue Ganz-Schmitt is just utterly adorable, educational and captivating. I have to say kuddos to the illustrator because the pictures are fabulous! As an adult, I can appreciate the artistry but a child enjoys the vibrant colors and fairytale theme.

The story is a perfect combination of a sweet but not too sappy love story of how a prince finds his princess and what happens when she is exposed to a peanut. The use of a "little sword" aka epinephrine and a description of how it works is told in a non-threatening manner so that children reading it will understand the purpose but not be afraid of it. I especially love how the author incorporates the skin test with other factors, such as "three blind mice" and "witches". The story characters even mention label-reading and getting rid of the allergenic foods in the castle.

But my favorite part of the book was one simple line when the Princess asks the question that everyone who has been touched by food allergies asks "Why me?" The doctor responds "Ahh, but princesses are extraordinary, and extraordinary people have great sensitivities." I can think of no better response than that.

The author also includes information in the back of the book for common food allergy facts and definitions for those who are new to the world of food allergies. To purchase the book or to listen to the catchy theme song, please visit

Sue Ganz-Schmitt, author

I recommend this book to anyone who has a child with food allergies, as a gift or even as a book to bring to story hour in schools to help raise awareness about food allergies. After all, aren't we all a little extraordinary so why not start with the sharing of a good book?

Where's Winona Going To Land This Time?

Look at this wonderful arrangement of sunflowers that I picked up today- happy, bright, cheery and pleasant OR, are they sneaky, secretive sunflowers?

Dun Dun DUUUNN!!  (In case you didn't put two and two together, that was my description for mystery music.)

So why the flowers and why accuse them of being not so innocent? Well, in case you have not heard the news, I have been hosting monthly giveaways for Winona Pure Oils. Yeah, I could have had a simple "Enter here, chance to win" but I like to keep things a bit fun so I put a twist on the contest.

Do you remember "Where's Waldo" from way back when? Waldo inspired me to send Winona off to play hide n' seek to help me out with the giveaway and she plays very play, if I do say so myself. Sure, it's not to the same degree- you haven't seen Winona hiding somewhere in a vast amount of people or things but still, fun and tricky (I think).

Enough, so how do we do this????
Easy and simple-
Step 1:   Study the picture very carefully
Step 2:   Locate the hidden bottle of Winona Pure Sunflower Oil Spray
Step 3:   Email me your guess to
Step 4:   Share when possible because the contest is open to everyone and sharing is a nice thing to do
Step 5:   Begin to count down the days until Friday, January 24th when the winner will be chosen
Step 6:   Either jump for joy that you won, grumble & moan that you didn't win or patiently wait for the next round of "Where's Winona?" in February.

So what do you have to lose? Nothing! In fact, in case you have not had the pleasure of meeting Winona before, I can tell you that you can only gain from using Winona Pure Oils. Why? Because the only ingredient that you will find in their spray oils (with the exception of the flavored sprays that also contain spices and flavoring) is just oil- no propellants, no soy and no additives. Not sure where to find them? Simply check out their store locator or order online directly from them. Unless you are this month's winner- then you will receive a three pack of Winona Pure Sunflower Oil Spray to your home and that means no purchasing or even leaving your home. Think about all the bragging that you could do about that one!

Why are you still reading this? Goodness, nobody is going to enter for you so get to it and good luck!

Sweet Debbie's Organic Treats Book Review

A few weeks ago, Debbie Adler sent me a copy of "Sweet Debbie's Organic Treats Allergy-Free & Vegan Recipes from the Famous Los Angeles Bakery" book to review, how cool is that?! Ok, the first thing that I have to say is that the cover alone made me drool...I mean, come on, look at this-

Is it me or could you lick the front page?!

I have to admit that I was even a bit envious- all of the pictures look divine, comforting, coaxing but enough about the pictures, down to the knitty gritty.

What do I like about it?  Goodness, where do I even begin?
  • Photos are awesome and appetizing (we covered that), good selection of recipes (can never have too many recipes), she uses many grains that are power-packed, such as amaranth and chia (a woman after my own heart) and all of her recipes are 12 steps or less (which is key when you are trying out allergy-friendly recipes).
  • Debbie also includes helpful information such as information on the ingredients that she uses and why they are more than just replacements but also healthier for us.
  • She includes a section on which kitchen items you will need for the recipes so you will not be making a mad dash to the store in the middle of baking. Being prepared is always good! What's worse than getting psyched up to try a new recipe only to realize that you don't have the supplies?
  • Resources- where do you get the ingredients? She's got you covered!

What did I not like? Not much, and to be honest the only thing that I did not like was a personal thing, not Debbie's fault at all and that is ingredient availability. This is purely a circumstance due to where I live and what is available to me, nothing more. That being said, I think she's rockin' the recipes, wouldn't you?

What did I learn? I learned that there are a bunch of allergy-friendly ingredients out there that I still need to try! I knew that products are constantly coming out but I have an entire list of new items to try out and I cannot wait to see how they are. I also found out that Debbie and I have similar paths- she started doing what she is doing because of her son. This hits close to home and I feel even more encouraged than I did before.

What was my favorite recipe? I have to be honest- I cannot pinpoint one specific recipe that would be a favorite, I liked them all. I have a bit of a sweet tooth by nature and the fact that Debbie also incorporates protein into many of them is an added plus in my book (no pun intended). For me to share one specific recipe (I feel) would not give the entire book justice. My best advice- grab a copy and go for it!

Where can I find out more? In case you didn't know, she's got a full page of contact information for shipping out her goodies (yay!) but you may also view her website (click here) for her book, additional information, questions and bunches of other things. She can also be found on Facebook so make sure you stop by her page and let her know that Nutrimom sent you.

Lastly, I want to say thank you to Debbie for allowing me to review her book. It was an honor and I am grateful for being included in the process of helping to spread  the word about great allergy-friendly resources like you!
