As you know, I am proud to be an official SunButter Blogger. Our family has used SunButter for as long as I can remember since it's healthy, allergy-friendly and very versatile. I love to play in the kitchen and see what new recipes and ideas pop into my head to share with everyone. And now, SunButter is asking everyone to let them know what you can do with it too.

Cremeless Creme Egg?!


I seem to have had Easter early at my house. Well, when I say "I" what I really mean is "me". I had another package arrive for taste-testing and who can turn down chocolate? Not me. Ever.

What was it? Well, do you remember an ooey, gooey treat called Cadbury Egg that was usually hidden in your Easter basket amongst the other goodies? I guess you could say this was a product that puts an allergy-friendly twist on that egg. The best thing is that not only is it safe but it was a near perfect replacement egg. Indie Candy makes a Fancy Creme Egg that is even better than that measly Cadbury item. I mean come on, look at the inside- perfect! Still looks like the other but it's not all running down the side of the chocolate onto the floor. Thicker outer chocolate and larger overall size = happier, more content nosher. Speaking of nosher, check out who else was trying to get his nose into it ~

Ingredients, Please Luckily, this guy is free of gluten, dairy, nut/peanut, soy, sesame and it's vegan. It is also produced in a facility that is certified top 8 allergy free and the chocolate is also certified dairy, gluten and soy free. The ingredients include dark chocolate (chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, evaporated cane juice), cane sugar, organic tapioca syrup, vanilla extract (vanilla, corn alcohol) and beta carotene from carrots.(Carrots! Does that mean this could fall under my daily serving of vegetables?! Hey, maybe that's why the rabbit is going after it!)

How to Find Premium Chocolate

I remember as a child waiting to wake up on Easter morning and ripping into my basket of goodies. Nothing, nothing beat that chocolate bunny that would be in there. You know, the one that (for some reason) you always eat the ears off of first before anything. So when I had my son and started to put his Easter baskets together,I realized that his baskets would require a bit more effort past the local pharmacy for that little hollow guy. Food allergies and candy are not as magical as the Easter bunny is.

For many years, I have followed and been told about an allergy-friendly chocolate producer called Premium Chocolatiers. I will admit that until this year, I have not ordered anything from them so when I contacted them and asked if I could try out one of their bunnies, I was overjoyed that they took me up on it. If you go to their website, you will be amazed at all of the different selections that are available for holidays, special occasions and just for down right munching. They also offer many allergy-friendly versions of the candies that you wish you could eat while having a food allergy, such as chocolate bars, covered pretzels and candy-bar like treats. It's like you died and went to food allergy-friendly heaven. I could just imagine a real-life "kid in a candy store" in their store- oh goodness!

I was lucky enough to receive Mikey the Magical Milkless Bunny. Check out how cute this little fellow is-
He's dotted with some non-dairy white chocolate and he's hollow, just like the bunnies that you used to get when you were younger. Not only is he cute but he is free of dairy, peanuts/tree nuts, egg, gluten and he is vegan. That's one tall order for such a small, yummy guy. But I have to say that he lives up to his reputation. Even though this chocolate is dairy free, it tastes just like a milk chocolate. Their is no strange after-taste that you sometimes find with allergy-friendly products. I am willing to bet that if you put him next to your run-of-the-mill chocolate bunny that you can find anywhere and asked who could tell which was which, there would definitely be some splitting of hairs (get it- hairs, rabbit...never mind). What I did find out is that there is a  magic ingredient inside little Mikey that made the dark side of my child appear (chocolate, dark- another one..it's funny, come on!). As with many sweets and goodies, beware- when you least expect it your child will defy you and all that you have told them and eat the last piece of poor Mikey! Mothers will gladly give their last bite of food to their children but this is not the same thing at all -

I did want to mention something else that happened as well. I wasn't going too but I think it's a necessary reminder to us all. During our taste-testing, my son began to have a small reaction. This being said, I want to clarify that I don't believe it was due to anything in the chocolate. The representative from Premium Chocolatiers was on the ball and was very fast at responding to my email of questions and concerns. Re-accessing the situation, I (believe) what happened was due to something that I overlooked, meaning I stupidly used a napkin to break up the chocolate that I thought had been replaced after my lunch of shrimp and pasta (my son is allergic to shellfish, among other things).

Why am I telling you this? For a few reasons. First- I want to reiterate how the situation was handled by the company, letting us know that they don't take food allergies lightly. This is key in finding safe products.

Secondly, that even the best of us can make a simple mistake at anytime.  Looking back, I even remember questioning myself as I went to grab the napkin if I had gotten a new one or not and I didn't listen to that little voice, as I should have. Always, always be cautious and double-check (triple check if you have too). I feel horrible and guilty for allowing that to happen to my son but it put me back on guard to always be ready for anything. I have to say, the calmest person when it happened was my son which tells me that he has been educated about his food allergies. That gives me comfort but I owe him for failing him this time.

St Patrick's Day Giveaway Winner

Love them all! 

Southern Foods at Home actually found me last year and I have to say that I am impressed by their quality of food as well as their food processing. Again, as a food allergic mother, I need to be extremely careful about what foods are processed/cooked/touching/breathing on each other. I have no worries with this company and best of all, they have natural, free range foods, gluten free products and they are even doing their best to be eco-friendly. Intrigued? On a personal note, I have also formed a great relationship with their salespeople and Vice President so whenever I have a question, I know I will be taken care of immediately and without feeling as if I am just another number. Again, family-friendly which is important to me.

Rudi's Gluten Free Bakery was one of the products that I gladly stumbled across during one of my latest shopping trips for myself and not my son (go figure). Since I have been trying to stay gluten free as much as possible, I was pleasantly surprised at how great their products are just because, well, most gluten free products just tend to be disappointing. I was even happier to see all of the wonderful information on their website- the promos, the coupons (I love coupons!) and the fact that they were more than willing to be a part of this to help out tells me they care. These are the companies that I tend to love because products are not just about producing items, they are about getting personal and helping more people. Plain and simple.

Guest Post - Healing ADHD & Asperger’s Without Hurting

Before I became "Nutrimom", I was like any other food allergy mother. But I had a stroke of luck and fate when my son was diagnosed with food allergies- I was fortunate enough to be working for a medical doctor who used a nutritional approach for parents who did not want to use traditional medicines for their children's behavioral and developmental disorders- she used nutrition. I saw miraculous changes first-hand and to this day, it inspires me to tell anyone else whose child might benefit from it. This is why I chose to share Jenn's story.

storyIn 2009, at age 3 ½, the my son Evan was diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) along with an Attention Deficient Disorder, OCD accompanied by motor and speech Apraxia, and a sensory processing disorder.  His speech was unintelligible and he had many global developmental delays. As Evan retreated into his own silent world and became more anxious and full of rage, I grew desperate to find someone or something to help him.  Like most parents of autistic children, I spent much time and effort trying traditional behavioral and medical treatments, which provided very little hope.  As a psychotherapist, I knew the next step would be medication, but didn’t want, to expose her son to the potentially devastating side-effects, which included increased obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) depression, social withdrawal, paranoia, impulsiveness, tics, seizures, and increased violent behavior. I had a strong feeling that there must be a better way… and found it!
A naturopathic physician tested Evan and started us on the road of natural healing.  I discovered Evan had numerous food sensitivities, which were addressed with diet modification, nutrient therapy, homeopathy, osteopathic care, chiropractic care and acupressure.  They addressed bowel and gut inflammation and toxicity issues, gut permeability, hypoglycemia, adrenal fatigue, and got to the root of all of Evan’s nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, they discovered some underlying genetic mutations that were preventing Evan from correctly metabolizing certain nutrients that directly affect brain health.
After treating Evan bio-medically, and with other healing practices we witnessed such a tremendous improvement in all areas of Evan’s life. Today, Evan is a happy and well-adjusted 8 year old. He is able to stay on task and presents less carelessness. He has less difficulty listening to and following directions, and no longer seems to get as distracted by background noise. He listens to his teachers and responds appropriately when asked questions. He is able to retain information and speaks more clearly to convey his ideas.
Evan talks to strangers in waiting rooms and has whole conversations. He is less anxious and no longer grunts and screams, throws toys, hits others, has mood swings, or throws himself into fits of uncontrollable rage. He also copes better with changes in routine and frustrating situations. Loud noises and uncomfortable clothing no longer bothered him.  His pre-kindergarten treatment plan included a communication device to help Evan to write and communicate. However, when Evan started kindergarten he no longer needed such a device. His fine motor skills significantly improved. He was also able to communicate clearly and express his thoughts and ideas in a sequential way.
Evan is now a confident little boy who is eager to join in group activities. His motor planning ability has jumped from extremely disordered to barely noticeable.  After biomedical treatments began there was a significant increase in his imaginative play, and although not perfect, he shows greater independence in daily activities of living.  He is making eye contact more often and now greets his friends at the playground. He no longer enters into a trance-like state. He no longer detaches himself from the world.
It has become my mission to reach out to the millions of parents who struggle with whether or not to medicate their children. I started a Facebook page called, Healing ADHD & Asperger’s Without Hurting to start the conversation and get the information out quickly.
Healing without Hurting will be available in stores on November 13, 2014, and I strongly believe it will be a huge asset to every parent who has a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, motor and speech apraxia, Sensory Processing Disorders, and any Autism Spectrum Disorder.

When Cookies For Breakfast are Acceptable

Yesterday, I saw a very intriguing recipe posted by SunButter Sunflower Seed Spread. The recipe is simple- SunButter, some spices, and chocolate.. LOTS of chocolate. And I keep seeing this post which states "Chocolate comes from cocoa which comes out of a tree. That makes it a plant. Therefore, chocolate
counts as a salad. The end." and I firmly agree with this.

I am all about easy recipes that also include protein so there I sat, staring and drooling at my computer screen. I often see recipes that I say "I want to try that!" but just don't have the time. But then, an act of God (literally) pushed me to give it a shot. Rather than sticking to what I had originally planned for the day (work, work, and oh, work) we woke up to a lovely mixture of snow and ice. Really, just ice. And I have to admit- as much as I dearly love my children and try to spend time with them, this winter has been unexpected in North Carolina and (I say this lovingly), I'm pretty sure we are all just about done with extra curricular bonding time. So instead, I decided to go against ALL of my usual rules about breakfast- at breakfast, ALWAYS have a protein, breakfast CANNOT be skipped and breakfast MUST be healthy to keep your brain flowing properly throughout the day. Today, during this ice storm, this all went right out the window. Why am I telling you this? Because as a Food Allergy Consultant, I not only stress the importance of good foods and food combinations but I also always tell the truth. I am also a normal mom who does the best that she can with her current situation and I understand that others do the same. It's just life. What I am doing now is still 1,000 better than what I was doing last week, last month, last year and I am ok with that.

Back to the morning production of the Giant SunButter Nut-Free Chocolate Chunk Cookies. I mean, when have I ever said 'Let's have cookies for breakfast!" I can honestly say, never. So of course, NutriDaughter (my kitchen helper, which is ironic because it's my son who has the food allergies...typical) and I got out all of the ingredients needed for the recipe. See- simple and just a few ingredients.


And due to the weather, both of us were appropriately dressed for the occasion....I wonder where she gets her fashion sense? Can you guess who is who? (lol) We started mixing and adding and as I went to get the baking pan I froze- no parchment paper! NOOOOOOO!!!!!! Quickly, my brain went into action. Think, think, think. Use what I have...what do I have. Ah ha- paper muffin cups! Will it work? We did a test run of just a few in case it backfires, then we wouldn't waste all of the batter. Lo and behold, they worked like a charm.  My daughter renamed them "Muffin Cookies". Hey, no sticking, no cleanup, I was happy. 

And, the outcome? Three letters - O. M. G.!!!! Talk about a scrumptious, easy, melt-in-your-mouth cookie. They are addictive. I may have had three..or five. The consistency was a slightly crunchy outside with a chewy, gooey inside. And, I decided to test out an added crunch factor by adding Glutino Gluten Free Pretzel Sticks on top of a few of them. The result- very similar to a candy bar. For your viewing pleasure, here is a close-up-

These are definitely a recipe that I would make again (and again).
My daughter said that ours is better because "We filled ours with cuddles". I would recommend that when making this recipe, you double the batch. Ours made fifteen cookies which went pretty quickly. You could try making them smaller, in mini muffin cups but you know chances are that you would just eat twice as many then. They are also a bit filling and it sneaks up in you. My daughter had many more than I did and she wandered upstairs a bit later saying "I totally did not just eat the last SunButter cookie and I'm totally not going to throw up." As a mom, I was upset because she had too much of a good thing but I understand as I made myself leave the kitchen to stop eating them. 

There is another thing I must caution you about- because of the ingredients used in this recipe, you can quickly develop a side effect known as "Chocolate Crumb Finger". This phenomenon is caused by the peeling off of a muffin cup and the continued use of breaking apart the cookies to see the
chewy goodness inside. This cannot be helped and the only correct way to remove this is to lick the crumbs and chocolate off of your finger. Do not attempt to simply rinse it off- this will cause chocolate smudging on kitchen towels, which then leads to angry mothers all over the world who are trying to remove the chocolate stains from their white towels. Make the world a happier place and lick your finger. (Never thought I would say that, huh.)

Is That a Rabbit or Are You Just Glad to See Annie's?


As you know, I get oober excited whenever I am asked to post a product review. (Oober, is that even a real word?!) You get the idea. So, of course I was thrilled when Annie's Homegrown contacted me and wanted to know if I would try out some of their new Gluten Free Granola Bars. Gluten free, an Oatmeal Cookie flavor and a Double Chocolate Chip flavor, it was pretty much a no-brainer. (winking, smiling).



I have to say, Annie's is always great about sending me a few samples. Which is good because very often, I will find a few missing form my pile and suspicious crumbs in the kitchen counter.

The first thing that I always do and I recommend that anyone should do is to read the product labels. As you know, everybody's allergies are different and label-reading can be a life saver. The Gluten Free Oatmeal Cookie Chewy Gluten Free Granola Bar ingredients include gluten free toasted oats (whole grain oats, organic cane sugar, canola oil, mixed tocopherols, which contains soy), tapioca syrup, rice crisp, raisins, palm oil, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic cane syrup, rice fiber, organic inulin, natural flavors, organic cinnamon, organic sunflower lecthin, sea salt and organic annatto extract (for color).  

Fast Fun Fact: What the heck are tocopherols? As per merriam-wbester.com, "Any of several fat-soluble oily phenolic compounds with varying degrees of antioxidant vitamin E activity."  

What Did I Think? This is difficult because I do love many of Annie's products and I am honored to have requests for product reviews. With this being said, I always stay true because, after all, that is also one of the points of having a product review, right? I will say that for me, personally, I was not too fond of the Oatmeal Cookie variety. It seemed a bit on the sweet side (so, again, it could just be me) but also, it didn't taste too much like an oatmeal cookie. My taste buds were waiting for that typical cookie-that-Grandma-baked kind of bar. What this reminded me of was more like a honey granola bar. Overall, the consistency was good, the size was larger than other allergy-friendly granola bars (a plus!), these would be great for a grab-no-go snack but if I was choosing, I probably would go for another flavor next time. Don't hate me, Annie's! I beg of you, do not send out those vicious, rabid bunnies to attack me at night for revenge!

The Gluten Free Double Chocolate Chip Chewy Gluten Free Granola Bar was a different story- a story filled with love at first bite, of eating way too fast and of chocolate. This is the untold story of Annie's Double Chocolate Chip Chewy Gluten Free Granola Bar (gosh, say that three times fast!)  This granola bar was one that I hid away because I knew, just knew that they would be stolen in a nanosecond by either NutriDad or NutriDaughter (both are cute and would probably get away with it unharmed). But still, I wanted these for my very own. 

Yeah, Yeah, The Taste Please? This is a gluten free granola bar that I would eat again. These are not too sweet at all but perfectly chocolatey and crunchy. They are almost like a cross between a granola bar and a krispy treat meaning they have good consistency without being too solid (or, like many gluten free products tend to be like, cardboard). Easily able to be eaten in four single bites, these are a good snack to have just because. No other reasons needed. Who needs reasons,anyway? This is your house and you can eat if you want too. Ingredients for this item are gluten free toasted oats (whole grain oats, organic cane sugar, canola oil, mixed tocopherols (yup, there they are again!) which contains soy, tapioca syrup, rice crisp, palm oil, chocolate chips (cane sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecthin, vanilla), organic cane syrup, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic inulin, rice fiber, cocoa, natural flavors, sea salt and organic sunflower lecithin.

Important Note: I did want to mention that both have an allergen warning that they contain soy and that they are made on shared equipment that also processes tree nuts. Just to be safe, I recommend that everyone contact Annie's for more information to ensure your safety.

Where's Winona Winner

I hope everyone has enjoyed the past few months of my "Where's Winona?" giveaways because I know that I have. I am honored that I was allowed to present Winona Pure Oil using my own methods to keep it creative but still professional. Why Do I Recommend Winona Pure Oil? I found Winona Pure Oil when I was looking for a baking spray that did not contain soy, chemicals or propellants. I happened to see it in my local food store and I have been hooked ever since. I recommend this oil to all of my new clients, friends, family and to anyone else that is looking for a healthier oil to use while cooking. As with any item that you are using in your kitchen, the less ingredients on a label, the better. Need proof?
